Live Saltwater Rotifers

The rotifers that Reed Mariculture supplies are the species Brachionus plicatilis (also referred to as the "L" Type) and are a saltwater species. They have been grown in our Instant Algae Continuous Rotifer System and are then concentrated and packaged into "breathable" bags.

Rotifers are small (100-1000 micron) zooplankton that are found in freshwater, brackish, and marine environments. The life span of our rotifers is 7 to 12 days, depending on temperature. They have very high metabolisms and need to feed continuously.

Rotifer Floss (Filter)

Rotifer Floss is a new innovation for cleaning detritus and ciliates out of rotifer systems. Keeping the water and tank clean from detritus (rotifer waste) is critically important in maintaining healthy, stable cultures - especially in high density systems.

Order Online

How It Works

Rotifer Floss is a non-woven polyester mat with an open structure that allows water to easily circulate through it. It should hang like a curtain in the culture vessel (weight the bottom so it doesn’t float up), and be sure to provide enough aeration to create good water circulation. Detritus contains high levels of sticky bacteria that cause suspended waste particles to collect on the floss. Use of floss ordinarily eliminates any accumulation of detritus on the bottom of the vessel.

Cleaning the Floss

To remove accumulated detritus from the floss, simply lift it out of the rotifer vessel, let it drain for 10 seconds over the vessel, then wash it down with a strong spray of tap water. The loose detritus is quickly removed; there is no benefit to removing every trace of detritus. Run a brush over the inside surfaces of the culture vessel to remove any adhering detritus. Re-hang the floss in the culture vessel, and it will now trap and remove the re-suspended detritus.

We recommend cleaning the floss daily. A regularly cleaned floss will remove the maximum amount of detritus. There is no downside to cleaning it often.

How often should the filter be cleaned?

We recommend cleaning the filter daily. A regularly cleaned filter will remove the maximum about of detritus. There is no downside to cleaning it often.

Artemia - Brine Shrimp Eggs

Order by Phone

At this time of year, our supply of Artemia is somewhat limited. If you would like to purchase them, please contact us directly.

Not all GSL artemia are the same quality. What one company may label as 90% may be equivalent to another company's 85%. The true measure of quality is the nauplii per gram (NPG) count and not simply a hatch rate designation.

Our GSL Artemia 90% have an NPG count of 250,000 - the average for 90% GSL from other companies is 245,000. These are among the highest quality available anywhere. These GSL cysts are over-wintered, washed, dried, and tested under strict guidelines before categorizing into the different hatch rate categories. Average nauplii size at hatching is 440 microns. Store in cool dry place (~4C)

Guaranteed Analysis: Protein - 60%, Fat - 24%, Ash - 4.4%, Moisture - 8.5%

The cans are 16 oz/454 grams each.
